M-Commerce: Big Dollars, but still a small piece of the pie

Followers of technology trends have been heralding the year that “m-commerce comes into its own” for some time now. Earlier, I wrote that 2010 was not likely yet that year, but the growth could be spectacular. As reported this month in Internet Retailer, Coda Research Consultancy predicts that m-commerce, will grow 177% this year as a percentage of overall e-commerce, and will likely exceed $2.4 billion.

This rate of growth is truly impressive. $2.4 is a truly large number. However, perspective is needed: This achievement still only represents 1.53% of the overall e-commerce spend. Many factors are coming together (bandwidth, flat data plans, proliferation of smart phones) to create a perfect storm of accelerated growth and m-commerce may well reach the 8.58% of the market touted by Coda for 2015. That being said, it’s far from the time to give up on conventional sites yet.
